DMV: be prepared!

Were you recently granted citizenship or DACA status? Before you go to the DMV to get a driver’s license, you should know what to bring. Make sure that you have all of the following:

1. Proof of U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence in the country

  • A work permit
  • A government-issued birth certificate
  • A U.S. passport
  • A foreign passport with U.S. immigration documents

2. A Social Security Number

  • DACA recipients can get a SSN from the Social Security Administration

3. Proof of full legal name

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Passport
  • Work permit

4. Proof of your address

  • A bill
  • A bank statement

In November, Oregon will vote on the Driver’s Card Referendum. The Driver’s Card law would give undocumented persons the chance to take a driving test and apply for a temporary driving card. This would regulate drivers on the street and give community members the mobility that they need. Already a citizen? ILG is registering people to vote! If you can’t vote, that’s okay––there are other ways to help as well.
