Report from the 2011 Summer Fellow

2011 Summer Fellow Duncan Fulton found his time at ILG to be “incredibly rewarding and thought-provoking.” Originally from Dallas, Texas, Duncan is now in his third year at Tulane Law School. Of the ILG Summer Fellowship, he writes, “I particularly enjoyed the research and writing focus of the fellowship. It seems to be a great way to progress from the knowledge gleaned from a survey immigration law course to real-life practice…I also enjoyed the mix of projects. The experience included everything from researching quick criminal issues the day of a hearing to simple motions to short memos to complex appellate briefs.” Duncan says he feels lucky to have learned both from the mentorship ILG attorneys offered him as well as from his dedicated co-workers: “I would certainly recommend the experience to friends interested in the field.” To read Duncan's full report, click here.

Report of ILG 2010 Summer Fellow

"It was one of the best summer experiences I've ever had," says Laura L. Lunn, the ILG 2010 Summer Fellow.  "The breadth and scope of the disaster of government policies, legislation, and public opinion that is based on myths that impacts immigrant communities was terrifying to witness."  A native of Michigan, Laura is entering her third year at the University of Iowa School of Law.  Her efforts this summer, summarized in this report, were intended to advance the progressive cause of immigrant rights using social justice models and litigation.  "I couldn't have wished for a better summer experience," Laura explains.  "The firm was very supportive, I made great friends and for me, best of all, I contributed to making our nation a safer place for immigrants and refugees."

Report of the 2009 Summer Fellow

Marsha Chien, the 2009 Summer Fellow, found her time at Immigrant Law Group to be not only rewarding and informative -- but transformative in the way she approaches law and legal thinking.  "In working at ILG, I finally realized how all of the skills I learned in law school could be used in a powerful way not only to change the legal status of individual clients but to advocate for systemic changes to our immigration laws as a whole," Marsha explained in an interview.
