Marsha Chien, 2009 ILG Summer Fellow. “After working as a Peace Corps volunteer in a rural village in Guatemala, I truly understand the importance of dedicated attorneys in empowering marginalized populations,” explained Marsha in her application for the first summer fellowship. From a field of extremely talented individuals, Marsha was selected for her legal skills as well as her ability to build the fellowship. She notes that “By working with a historically disenfranchised people and learning the Mayan Q’eqchi’ language and history, I gained an eye-opening, grassroots perspective of a people lacking access to legal remedies.” Marsha is a second year law student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is the Co-Director of the Immigration Clinic and Intake Coordinator of the Unemployment Compensation Project, where she also researches cases, drafts memos, conducts intake, as well as advocates on behalf of non-citizens. She has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, B.S. International Economics, Certificate in Asian Studies, where she graduated cum laude in 2004. Of note, she interned for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands and at The Brookings Institution in Washington DC. The ILG Summer Fellow will work on developing impact litigation strategies focused on ending the unlawful immigrant detention and work in the asylum defense program.
