Arizona Law In Appeals Court |
|
|
The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments yesterday for and against Arizona’s draconian and anti-immigrant state law, known as SB 1070. A Federal judge had blocked parts of the law shortly before it was scheduled to take effect, including a requirement that police request immigration documents from anyone they believe to be in the country without proper status. The law makes it a state crime to be undocumented in Arizona. Immigrant Law Group opposes the law and filed an amicus brief in support of the injunction. “This law is based not only on misguided, anti-immigrant sentiments, it is unconstitutional and we hope the court sees this,” said Stephen W Manning, a founding attorney at Immigrant Law Group. “The only way to fix our immigration system is through comprehensive immigration reform, which sees immigrants as people with rights and valuable members of our society.” |
