Karen McMahon

Karen McMahon is a receptionist at Immigrant Law Group. She holds a BA in Spanish Literature from Pacific Lutheran University and has a passion for immigrant rights and social justice. During college Karen studied abroad in Oaxaca, México where she had the opportunity to study the roots of immigration in rural Chiapas and the Mixteca region of Oaxaca. She has traveled, volunteered, and lived in various countries in Central and South America as well as Africa and India. Before joining ILG she spent several months working on organic farms throughout Peru.

Holly C Jackson

Holly Jackson is ILG's office manager. Holly grew up in Eugene and lived in Querétaro, México at various points during her childhood. She attended Wesleyan University, where she was named Student Poet and was invited to perform with Ghanaian Dance Master Helen Mensah. She graduated with a double major in English and Spanish Literature.

From 2008-2009 she lived in rural Spain, where she taught in two public schools and worked for an olive press. She has worked on farms in Oregon, Connecticut and Spain, written a commissioned biography, taught Spanish, translated and interpreted, and is now happy to be working for ILG.

Alfredo Avila

Alfredo is a legal assistant at ILG. He is a native Oregonian born to Mexican immigrants. He has a B.A. in Spanish, Language and Culture from Southern Oregon University, spent a year studying abroad at the Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico, and has also lived, worked and traveled in Mexico on multiple occasions. His travels have also taken him throughout Central and South America raising his overall awareness and understanding of Latin America.

Before arriving at ILG he worked for four years in business and management in Portland. His family’s immigrant background and his understanding of their experiences allow him to truly appreciate the hardships of immigrants. He is passionate about helping clients and making a difference.

 
Yesenia Gallardo

Yesenia is a legal assistant. She holds a BA from Willamette University in History and Asian Studies, having lived, volunteered, and taught in rural China. She has traveled to various parts of the globe, most recently back to northern Tibet and China working among Tibetan and Uigher minorities on environmental justice issues. As the daughter of a Mexican-Ecuadorian immigrants who share many of the same experiences as our clients, she joined ILG in hopes of bringing compassion and understanding to those seeking immigration services and counseling.

Leland Baxter Neal

Leland Baxter-Neal is a legal assistant at Immigrant Law Group. An Oregon native, Leland graduated from the University of Oregon in 2003 with a major in journalism and a minor in Spanish. Between 2004 and 2009, Leland lived in Costa Rica where he worked as a reporter, writing for both local publications and international media, including The Miami Herald and Reuters. He studied abroad in Mexico during college and has spent time in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.

His reporting and travels have made him deeply familiar with the social and political context of Latin America, informing him on many of the issues that underlie immigration.  He was drawn to Immigrant Law Group by the potential to make a positive impact in the lives of individual clients.

Shizuko Hashimoto

Shizuko Hashimoto is a legal assistant at ILG.  A graduate of Reed College, she was coordinator of the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee, an organization advocating for international solidarity and immigrants rights throughout the Americas.  She continues to volunteer with local immigrants rights organizations, and also serves on the Grantmaking Committee of the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation, a social justice foundation based in Portland.
