How to Choose an Immigration Attorney

Choosing the right attorney to represent you is a very difficult process and decision. Not only do you need to find someone who will represent you legally but you need to find someone who cares about you as an individual and who takes every case seriously.  At ILG we recognize that it is about the person, not the process.  Yes, we can get you the legal representation that you need, but we also care deeply about each and every one of our clients.

  • Why do you need an immigration attorney?
    • There is a lot of paperwork that goes into filing any petition for legal status. Not only is this paperwork extensive, but it must be precise and correct.
    • Is your case complicated?  If so, immigration attorneys are skilled in handling the simplest of cases to the most complicated.
    • What if you run into an issue halfway through? Your immigration attorney will be there to help you through any legal issues and will help to smooth out the case and get it back on track.
    • Don’t have time to fill out the paperwork or stick with the process?  Our job and our passion is to do that for you and help you become a legal resident or citizen of the United States.
  • How do you choose the right attorney?
    • There are many resources that can aid you in your decision making process. Don’t know where to start? First ask your family and friends if they know of any attorneys.  If that doesn’t help you, there are many online resources that can get you started.
      • Check out the AILA search site.  This is a site of attorneys who practice and teach immigration law.  AILA stands for the American Immigration Lawyers Association.  The lawyers that you find on this site are sure to be skilled in immigration matters and qualified to help you with you case.
      • Before you hire an attorney look them up on the Oregon State Bar website.  This way you can make sure he or she is a licensed attorney and also see any complaints filed against them.
  • You’ve found a couple of options for representation, now what?
    • Cost is a very important factor in making your decision for representation.  There are attorney’s out there that will get you the help that you need at reasonable costs.  Compare the costs of all of your options along with their credentials.

Why should you choose an ILG attorney?

  • ILG has over 10 years in the business, yep that is over 10 years of success and caring about our many clients.
  • We have been recognized numerous times by other attorneys and organizations for our hard work and dedication. Take a look at our awards page to learn more.
  • Our attorneys have served as leadership on AILA Oregon’s council, on the AMICUS committee, and on AILA’s board of governors.
  • Our attorney’s have been selected as Superlawyers numerous times.
  • Everybody at our office speaks Spanish and we also have a staff member that speaks Russian.
  • Our staff is extremely knowledgeable.  New ILG staff members have to attend a comprehensive two week training when they start working for us, but it doesn’t stop there.  New staff receive intensive training during their first 3 months as ILG and all staff attend by biweekly training to keep up-to-date on important information.
  • We consider impact litigation to be an important part of our work.  This means that we fight for our clients even when the immigration system is stacked against them.  We’re not afraid to challenge unjust and incorrect decisions.
  • We are experienced in same-sex marriage immigration processes and passionate about working with LGBTQ clients.
  • We want to represent you!
