ILG presses officials for immigration reform
The ILG office cleared out last week as our staff visited the headquarters of our elected officials to lobby them to support comprehensive immigration reform.
ILG spearheaded local efforts of the National Day of Action, an annual, nation-wide effort coordinated by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). As AILA lawyers were meeting with senators and congressmen in Washington, D.C., ILG staff visited the offices of Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Congressman David Wu in Portland. More meetings are expected in the coming weeks with representatives of Congressmen Earl Blumenauer and Kurt Schrader.
One result of these meeting is the Safe-Space Project, which looks to provide a calm and reational presence in the town hall meetings our senators and congressmen will be holding throughout the year. The goal is to coutner an outspoken and misled minority from dominating these events with anti-immigrant sentiments, and offer constitutents an informed
perspective on the injustice of the current immigration system.
